Compare that with Azure Data Studio which can be installed on Windows, macOS, and Linux computers.
#Azure data studio windows
SSMS has always been available on Windows only.

First, I mentioned that Azure Data Studio is compatible with more computers, that's because it's a cross-platform application. So let's take a look at a few of these features in more detail. I think it lowers the barrier of entry to the world of SQL databases and it makes them more accessible to more people. And it's compatible with more computers too. Azure Data Studio on the other hand, is the newer, cleaner, faster, lighter weight alternative. Now let's face it, Management Studio has been around for a very long time and it carries a lot of baggage. For now, Management Studio remains the flagship program for data professionals and is technically more capable, especially when it comes to some of the highly specialized maintenance tasks that database administrators need to perform on SQL server. Azure Data Studio does perform many of the same tasks as Management Studio. Now, if you have experience working with SQL server databases, you might be thinking that this sounds a lot like SQL Server Management Studio or SSMS. Once a connection is established, Azure Data Studio provides a number of tools to help you interact with that server, write queries and execute other management commands, review and edit data, and ensure that the server is in good operational health.

Its primary tool set allows you to connect to the full assortment of data platforms based on Microsoft's SQL server and Azure SQL Database Technologies as well as additional relational databases through optional add-on extensions. Azure Data Studio is a modern cross-platform management tool for working with databases. I recommend using Azure Data Studio at the very least because this application has been heavily worked on.- Let's kick off this course by talking about what exactly Azure Data Studio is. In addition, I hope this post has also introduced others to Azure Data Studio itself. Hopefully my post about the Insiders build has been useful for some of you.

You can read more about the Insiders build in detail and download it here. Of course, they could also change once they are released to the stable version. In addition, remember these features are subject to change in the Insiders build and could change in a newer version. However, if you do encounter issues you can easily provide feedback on GitHub.

Of course, because the Insiders build is actively being developed you have to appreciate it may not be as stable as the official build. Or you can deploy to an existing minikube environment instead. In fact, you can use this wizard to deploy a Big Data Cluster to a variety of places that hosts a Kubernetes service.įor example, you can start with absolutely nothing in place and deploy to somewhere that has Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) in-place like Azure or Azure Stack. In fact, it’s a feature I highly recommend looking at yourself.īecause it makes it easy to deploy SQL Server everywhere, including an easy to use wizard to deploy Big Data Clusters. I have to admit I do like the Deploy SQL Server wizard that’s currently in the Insiders build. For example, the Deploy SQL Server wizard. You can think of the Insiders build as a beta version of Azure Data Studio because it contains features that the team are currently working on. In fact, you can run it side-by-side with the stable version of Azure Data Studio that I discussed above.

Now, there is another version of Azure Data Studio that you can install called the Insiders build. I do recommend you try Azure Data Studio for yourself. Something I know others have discussed recently in various sessions and posts. In addition, it has some other really useful features like Notebooks. Which means you can also install it on both macOS and Linux. However, it differs from SQL Server Management Studio.įor instance, unlike SQL Server Management Studio it is multi-platform. Which you can read in detail here.įor those of you who are not aware what it is, Azure Data Studio is another application that you can use to manage SQL Server. In my last post I went through two methods I had used to deploy Big Data Clusters into Azure Kubernetes Service a lot of times. I’ve decided to talk about using Azure Data Studio Insiders build after my last post where I discussed deploying SQL Server 2019 Big Data Clusters.
